Fiete and Duck's Coffee Compass
Fiete and Duck love coffee! In any form, in any design. Here they share their favourite cafés and the best and most secret coffee spots they've visited!
Fox Williams
Fort William, Scotland
Duck says the coffee at Fox Williams is excellent. And it’s made with care. Fiete says you can have a nice natter with the baristas. Even though it’s a small place, there’s enough room to sit comfortably, especially when it’s raining. And! It’s a dog-friendly café! They’ve even written ‘Dogs welcome!’ on the door. We've met some very nice dogs when we had our two Flat Whites.
The wait for your coffee isn’t long, though of course it can take a bit longer when it’s busy. If you can’t wait for your coffee, perhaps coffee isn’t the right drink for you. In that case, you really ought to learn more about coffee culture and realise that coffee isn’t a drink for those in a hurry.
The prices are absolutely fine. The brick walls give the place a rustic feel; on the one hand, they make the café seem a bit rough around the edges, but on the other hand, the colours are warm and you quickly feel at home. Duck, of course, thought the yellow portafilter machine was absolutely brilliant. It’s exactly the same shade of yellow as his duck feet!
They also show art from local artists! And you can purchase some small gifts that are also made by local people! So warming!

PUSS FIKA
Nice, France
If you’re ever in Nice, this café is a must-visit! Natalie is the owner and she’s Swedish! They serve fresh, homemade kanelbullar. Duck tried one, of course, and found it excellent! Fiete had a good chat about a Tanat roast.
The interior design is typically Scandinavian, which can often look a bit contrived in other cafés. Not here, though! A real Swede naturally knows how to do Scandinavian style. It feels like a cosy living room, with all the lights and the little red horse that runs as a theme throughout the café.
The prices are the same as in any other speciality coffee shop. Natalie prepares the coffee with great care and dedication. Fiete and Duck really loved the two framed definitions on the wall. That’s how they realised they’re masters of ‘lagom’!
If you like cafés with heart and soul, PUSS FIKA in Nice is just the place for you. Tucked away in the beautiful old town of this city on the Côte d'Azur, Puss Fika is a lovely spot to linger and unwind. (And for kanelbullar, Duck whispers in my ear.)
Fiete strongly recommends ordering a batch brew and a kanelbullar;)

THE MILKMAN
Edinburgh, Scotland
The Milkman is a coffee shop and roastery with three branches in Edinburgh. Fiete and Duck reckon, though, that the best one is on Cockburn Street. But take note: the one at the top, not the one at the bottom near Waverley Station.
Duck says The Milkman is at its best in the early morning in winter. There aren’t any tourists about yet, and you can enjoy your coffee – even if it’s cold – on the lovely benches outside the coffee shop. Fiete loves sitting outside, sipping his flat white and listening to the city wake up. The two of them tried the famous window seat too, but preferred sitting outside.
Fiete likes the coffee; it’s full-bodied and smooth. Duck always tucks into all the pastries and thinks the pain au chocolat is absolutely delicious. You really must try the cinnamon buns when you're there!
The baristas are really friendly and very quick. Plus, their aprons are just so cool! The prices are about average. Fiete likes the design and the colours; it’s a bit on the darker side but suits Edinburgh’s vibe. Fiete would recommend ordering a flat white or a cappuccino and a pain au chocolat. Oh, and make sure you go first thing in the morning!

Speciality coffee brew bar, Edinburgh
With its earthy colours and earth-toned décor, this coffee bar is a lovely spot to escape the daily grind for a while. It’s the perfect place to read the paper – and the coffee is excellent! Fiete and Duck have already visited this great coffee bar twice. The first time they tried a batch brew, and the second time they had a batch brew and a flat white. The staff are very friendly and it’s a great place to have a quick chat.
The speciality coffee bar works with various roasters, but also roasts its own beans. You should definitely try their in-house roasts!
You have to wait a bit for your coffee, but it’s absolutely worth it. The prices are reasonable and typical for a speciality coffee shop. Duck particularly loves the mugs they serve the coffee in. They’re hand-made and have a lovely earthy feel to them. Duck also thinks the height of the door handle is just right, at least for him as a duck. Fiete has a bit of trouble with it, though. The handle is actually quite low down compared to other doors.
Fiete and Duck recommend popping into this coffee bar and then taking a look at the lovely galleries and antique shops. The atmosphere is absolutely brilliant.

Braw Brunch, Edinburgh
Going out for a casual breakfast in the middle of the week? Searching for pastries and sandwiches? Then Duck recommends Braw Brunch in Edinburgh for two reasons: 1. amazing coffee, 2. everything is yellow/orange, as Ducks little feet. But if Duck is there make sure to get a pastry before everything vanishes into Duck's tummy!
